About the Blitz
Following 2008 Cascade Football League season , Whatcom County Raiders owner Tom Abbott, received a call from the Next Level Professional Football League. The Raiders a Minor league team located in Bellingham Washington, had made a name for themselves in just two season of play by becoming the first minor league team from Whatcom County to win a minor league championship. The Raiders had compiled an 18-2 record winning Back to Back Cascade Football League Championships (2007 & 2008) and a # 1 ranking by the MLFN ( for spring and summer league teams).
The Raiders traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada where on December 6, 2008 they captured the Far West Football Alliance West Coast Bowl National Championship.
In the wake of Western Washington University canceling their football program, Tom Abbott recognized the tremendous void this left for many young men involved in the game of football. To help fill that void he joined the PDFL. Tom's purpose with the Raiders was to give young men and aspiring coaches the opportunity to pursue their football dreams. Joining the PDFL and creating the "Blitz" Franchise would create an even bigger platform and opportunity for players and coaches and support local Whatcom County businesses and the community as a whole.
The Blitz will bring a new level and quality of football to Whatcom County offering unlimited opportunities for young men and coaches using the great game of football as a platform.
2010 Blitz
Near the end of the 2010 season former Blitz owner Tom Abbott was unable to continue running the day to day operations of the team. In a gesture of good will Tom donated equipment, jersey's and other football related items to a local semi-pro team. For several months the future of the Blitz was completely up in the air. Inspired by false reports of their demise and their own will to succeed the Blitz players, coaches and dance team began the process to rebuild the franchise. With the help of local businesses like Applebee's, The Silver Reef Casino, Chappazz Massage, Vetch Construction and donations and direction from former NFL players the team now prepares for the 2010 season.
New uniforms, new logo, new direction and new attitude. The Blitz players, coaches, dance team and fans celebrate together doing what no one but the blitz family believed they could do. Play football in 2010. It time to "Get Blitzed".
What is developmental pro football?
it is 11 on 11 football played under N.F.L. rules. It is designed to give high caliber athletes and coaches a platform to display and improve their skills with some pursuing professional career's at the next level.
What makes developmental pro football different from semi-pro or minor league?
The majority of players on PDFL teams, including your Bellingham Blitz, have college football backgrounds playing previously at the D1, D2, or D3 level. This ensures a higher level of professionalism, competition and dedication to the game. PDFL team also offer more to the community with the ability to advertise local businesses and attractions via webcast games.
Unlike most local semi-pro leagues the PDFL features 4 strong teams, similar to the new UFL. Many local semi-pro league do feature sa few good teams but many of the teams are under manned with most of the talent having HS or less experience.
In addition, The PDFL and the Bellingham Blitz are committed to helping players and coaches fulfill their football aspirations. To date the Blitz have had some outstanding players like Matt Overton (signed 2010 Seattle Seahawks, 2009 Florida Tuskers UFL), Ryan Lucas (2010 currently in camp with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League), Jason Cunningham (2010 currently in camp with the BC Lions Canadian Football League) and use their experience with the Blitz to pursue their football dreams. Coaches have also benefited. Head Coach Brian Young was inducted in the minor league hall of fame in 2008 and Defensive Coordinator Orlando McCarty was recently hired to be the Defensive Coordinator Sehome HS.
